"The spearhead of Japan’s assault landing operations both in China pre-Pearl Harbor, and in US and British territory post-Pearl Harbor, was provided by the 12 numbered Special Naval Landing Forces - battalion-size IJN units, often but wrongly called ’Imperial Marines’ in Western sources. They then garrisoned a number of the islands which the US Marines had to take back in some of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific War (Philippines, Wake Island, Solomons, Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, Okinawa). This role gives them elite status in US eyes. They wore a range of uniforms and insignia distinct from Army types. This photographic format as per ELI 86 is unusual for Osprey but is attractive and practical in the few cases where it is feasible. It is also much cheaper |
