Built in greater numbers than any other combat aircraft in history, the Il-2 was one of the most important Soviet types fielded in action over the Eastern Front in World War 2. The aircraft featured a heavily armoured shell for its two-man crew which formed an integral part of the machine’s structure. Although tested and initially built as a two-seater, by the time production aircraft started to reach frontline units in March 1941 the Il-2 had lost the rear gunner’s position. A considerable number of aircraft were serving with the various Soviet air forces by the time Germany invaded the USSR in June 1941. Armed with ground attack rockets, the aircraft proved deadly against Wehrmacht panzers as pairs of Il-2s roamed the frontline at low level. However, the Shturmoviks (armoured attackers) were in turn vulnerable to attack from the rear by enemy fighters, so Ilyushin was ordered to revert to the two-seat layout in September 1942 with production of the Il-2M. Also produced in Il-10 form, with a more powerful engine and lighter wings, more than 43,100 Il-2/10s were built between 1941 and 1955. This book will provide a fascinating insight into the complex development history of a plane that was critical to Russia’s defence. From Stalingrad to Kursk to Berlin, Oleg Rastrenin charts the plane’s huge contribution to the most famous battles of hte Eastern front.
