When the Fw 190 first appeared over the Channel Front in the autumn of 1941, it caused shockwaves to ripple through the Allied air commands. Easily bettering the Spitfire Mk V and later, in its A-3 variant, the P-51A, the Fw 190 became a formidable opponent for the Allied air forces, and earned recognition as one of the best air superiority aircraft of World War II. As the war progressed, so the Fw 190 was enhanced and up-gunned, with the Sturmjger variants which, from the spring of 1944, became the Luftwaffe?s foremost heavy bomber interceptors. Armed with formidable packs of MG 151 20 mm and MK 108 30mm cannon, and equipping the Luftwaffe?s Sturmgruppen (?Close Assault Groups?), the Fw 190 A-8 accounted for hundreds of USAAF bombers shot down. Many Luftwaffe pilots became ?bomber-killers? ? highly skilled and tenacious aces whose victory scores included high numbers of ?four-engined kills?. Against the Fw 190 was pitted the B-17 Flying Fortress ? perhaps the most famous aircraft to emerge from World War II, primarily because of its impressive and undoubted performance during the Allied strategic bombing offensive against Germany. Carrying crews of nine or ten and no fewer than nine gun positions fielding 14 x 0.50-cal machine guns, the B-17 could deliver 4,000 lbs of bombs. By the summer of 1944, it was common for Assembled into huge combat wings and ?boxes?, several hundred B-17s would routinely formate into one raid by the summer of 1944, providing the German defenders with an enormous challenge in terms of self-defence and firepower. This is the first Duel title to pit bomber versus fighter as each side vied for supremacy in the skies over Europe.
