"The concept of the Main Battle Tank emerged from the Centurion Universal tank that was developed in the last years of World War II. Development of its successor began as early as 1951 and following wartime experience, priority was now given to heavy armour and firepower in the overall design. The Chieftain incorporated several significant innovations including a reclining position for the driver to reduce height and two-piece ammunition for greater survivability. Due to a NATO decision for MBTs to have a multi-fuel engine, it also featured an unsatisfactory engine, which was to be the Chieftains’s Achilles heel for many years as the one chosen was both underpowered and unreliable. The tank entered service in 1967 and was by far the heaviest armed and armoured MBT within the NATO alliance. Co-operation with the Israelis was proposed at this time but following the Six-day War of 1967, this project fell through and export sales of the Chieftain were restricted to the Iranians, Kuwaitis and Omanis. The Chieftain mounted a powerful 120mm gun as its main armament to destroy opposing MBTs at long range when most tanks of its generation had a 105 mm
