"The US Army requirement for a light utility helicopter was formulated after the Korean War. It would incorporate lessons learned from the British in Malaya and the French in Algeria. Bell’s Model 204 design - the first turbine-powered aircraft for the US Army - won a competition in 1955, and was given the military designation H-40. It was renamed the HU-1 Iroquois when the Army adopted its own designation system, (“HU” for “Helicopter Utility” gave rise to the famous “Huey” nickname), subsequently changed to UH-1.
The original design called for a helicopter that could be used for transport, airborne battlefield command and control, medical evacuation, fire support co-ordination, search and rescue. Later its missions would be expanded to include troop insertion/extraction, armed escort and special operations.
The production HU-1A (renamed UH-1A in 1962) entered service in 1959. The succeeding UH-1B and UH-1C had more power and improved rotors for greater agility. Early experience showed that while it was vastly superior to previous piston-engined utility models, the UH-1 needed more power and a more capacious fuselage. Almost immediately, Bell began to develop the Model 205. This introduced a longer fuselage, increased cabin space to accommodate a much larger number of passengers, and other changes. The first YUH-1D flew on 16 August 1961 and delivery to Army units began in 1963.
This title will detail all the technological background behind the development and use of the Huey “Slick” in Vietnam, as well as covering all the major uses that this transport aircraft was put to.
