Opis w j. angielskim:

Formed in October 1943 as part of the last group of fighter units to be sent into combat in Northern Europe and the Pacific, the 479th FG wrote for itself an impressive history against the Luftwaffe during the final year of the war flying from RAF Wattisham, in rural Suffolk. Despite the group?s P-38s not being highly regarded in the Eighth Air Force due to their unsuitability for high-altitude combat, the 479th?s pilots had a fierce pride of arms. Such fighting spirit earned them a Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation in the late summer of 1944 following their destruction of literally hundreds of German aircraft in the air and on the ground. The 479th was also unique in being credited with the USAAF?s first German jet (a rocket-powered Me 163) kill in July 1944. Finally, the 479th was the very last frontline operator of the iconic Lightning in the Eighth Air Force, and produced a handful of aces flying the type, including the legendary Robin Olds. Eventually transitioning to the P-51D in September 1944, the 479th excelled with the Mustang ? its pilots claimed more than 200 aerial and strafing victories during a period when a diminishing enemy presence made targets hard to find. Remaining in the thick of the action until the very end of the war in Europe, the 479th FG was credited with scoring the last aerial victory claimed by the Eighth Air Force?s VIII Fighter Command, on 25 April 1945. Some 29 aces had been created by the group come VE-Day, and the group had claimed more than 430 aerial and strafing victories.
